Ukraine Permission Extension Scheme Explained | Guild of Residential Landlords

The UK government has announced the Ukraine Permission Extension (UPE) scheme, offering eligible Ukrainian nationals and their family members an opportunity to extend their stay in the UK for up to 18 months. This scheme will open for applications at 9:00 AM GMT on 4 February 2025. Applications are free and must be made online.

Who is Eligible?

The UPE scheme is available to individuals who are currently in the UK under one of the following:

Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme (Homes for Ukraine)
Ukraine Family Scheme
Ukraine Extension Scheme

Those granted Leave Outside the Rules in certain circumstances may also apply. Applicants must reside in the UK and have been present since their initial permission under these schemes was granted.

Key Application Details

Applications must be submitted within 28 days of current permission expiring.
Submitting too early may result in rejection, while late applications can temporarily suspend work, housing, and benefits rights until a decision is made.
Applicants must provide evidence of identity, confirm their residency in the UK, and share accommodation and travel details as part of the process.

Biometrics and Identity Proof

Most applicants can verify their identities using the UK Immigration: ID Check app. However, some may need to provide biometric data at a visa application centre.

Travel Restrictions

Applicants must remain in the UK throughout the application process. If they leave before a decision is made, their application will be withdrawn.

Post-Approval Benefits

Upon approval, successful applicants will receive an updated eVisa confirming their right to live, work, study, and access public funds for an additional 18 months. This transition is part of the UK’s move towards a fully digital immigration system.
